Year 10: GCSE courses begin

From the first week of Year 10 the content taught is content that will be examined. Two-year courses in eight to ten subjects begin at once, and the pace is set by the specification, not the class.

What changes

Each subject follows an exam board specification (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC Eduqas) that lists exactly what can be asked. Grades are 9 to 1. Most subjects are assessed entirely by exams at the end of Year 11, so nothing in Year 10 is “banked”, but the topics taught in Year 10 are the ones most likely to be forgotten by the time of the exam.

The constraint worth knowing now

Sixth forms publish entry requirements per subject, and they bite. A common pattern is a 6 or 7 at GCSE in a subject before you can take it at A Level, with A Level maths often asking for a 7 and further maths for an 8 or 9. Sciences often want a 6 in maths as well. Each school sets its own; the point is to know the numbers in Year 10, while there is time to look after two or three subjects, rather than in Year 11 when the choice is being made.

Habits that pay in Year 10

Record the topic, not just the test. “Maths test, 32 out of 50” is a fact. “Lost marks on standard form and on expanding brackets” is a plan.

Start spaced practice. Small, frequent returns to earlier topics are the single most reliable finding in learning research. Year 10 content is exactly what needs it by Year 11.

Use the school report. Year 10 reports usually carry a predicted or working-at grade per subject. Compare it against the sixth form’s entry requirements; that comparison is the whole of Year 10 strategy.
