Year 12: A Levels begin, and so does UCAS

Three or four subjects instead of ten, each at a depth that surprises most students. A Levels are Level 3 qualifications, two-year courses examined at the end of Year 13, and Year 12 is where the habits that got a student through GCSEs stop being enough.

What changes

Fewer subjects, much more independent reading. Free periods that are meant for study. Teachers who expect the student, not the parent, to be the one who asks. Most sixth forms run end-of-Year-12 exams whose results become the basis of predicted grades, and predicted grades are what universities see in October.

UCAS starts here

For 2027 entry, applications for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary science close on 15 October 2026; for everything else the equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027. That means the research, the open days and a first draft of the personal statement belong to the summer term of Year 12.

The personal statement changed for 2026 entry onwards: three questions rather than one essay (why this course, how studies have prepared you, what else you have done), 4,000 characters in total with a 350-character minimum per answer.

Choosing courses honestly

Universities publish entry requirements per course: a typical offer such as AAB, required subjects, sometimes GCSE minimums. The Russell Group’s Informed Choices explains which A Level subjects matter for which degrees. Predicted grades a band below a course’s typical offer are not a reason to skip it, but a shortlist should hold a range.
