Applying to university from Northern Ireland
The UCAS machinery is the same across the UK. What differs is what a student here has in hand when they apply, and what the answer costs.

What is different about applying from here
By the time the application goes in during Year 14, the AS grades are real. They are certificated results, not predictions, because AS is sat at the end of Year 13 and carries 40 per cent of the A Level.
That changes the conversation. Queen’s University Belfast says that for its most competitive courses emphasis is placed on GCSE performance, with AS results taken into account in borderline cases or where they are significantly better than the GCSEs. An application backed by achieved grades is stronger than one backed only by an estimate, and a weak AS is harder to argue away.
The route most families forget
Universities in the Republic of Ireland are applied to through the Central Applications Office, on its own timetable and with its own scoring. It is not part of UCAS. Students who want both run two applications, and the mistake is starting the second one in January because the first one finished then.
Money, said plainly
For 2026 to 2027 the tuition fee loan is up to £4,985 at a university or college here and up to £9,790 at one in England, Wales or Scotland. That is close to five thousand pounds a year, before rent, and it is the largest single number in the decision. Fees are set annually, so check the year that applies.
The personal statement
Three questions rather than one essay: why this course or subject, how your studies have prepared you, and what else you have done and why it is useful. Four thousand characters in total including spaces, at least 350 per answer. One statement goes to all five choices, so it is about the subject, not about a university.
What Fincho does
Every date above sits on the exam roadmap with its source and a countdown, next to the A2 dates and any AS resit the student is carrying. The shortlist keeps each course’s published requirements beside the achieved AS grades and the predicted A2 grades, with the link to the page each requirement came from. The three personal statement answers can be drafted with Pip asking the questions an admissions tutor would.
Common questions
- What are the deadlines for 2027 entry?
- 18:00 on Thursday 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses. 18:00 on Wednesday 13 January 2027 for most other courses. Applications can still be sent until 18:00 on Wednesday 30 June 2027, after which they go into Clearing, which opens on Friday 2 July.
- How do we apply to a university in the Republic of Ireland?
- Through the Central Applications Office, not UCAS. It is a separate system with its own timetable and its own way of scoring results, so a student applying both ways runs two applications at once. Start it earlier than feels necessary.
- Is it cheaper to study here?
- Considerably. For 2026 to 2027 the tuition fee loan is up to £4,985 at a university or college in Northern Ireland and up to £9,790 at one in England, Wales or Scotland. Students at a public institution in the Republic of Ireland pay no tuition fee but do pay a student contribution charge.
