Year 13: the AS year, and why it is already the A Level

Year 13 is the first sixth form year, and it is the single point where this system differs most from the linear one used by the English boards. There, the first year produces nothing that counts towards the final grade. Here it produces 40 per cent of it.

What the 40 per cent means

A CCEA A Level is built from AS units and A2 units. The AS units, sat at the end of Year 13, are worth 160 of the 400 uniform marks in the full qualification. The A2 units in Year 14 carry the remaining 240. So the grade a pupil finishes with at the end of Year 14 is already two fifths decided by exams sat this June.

AS on its own is a qualification, at 180 guided learning hours, graded A to E. The full A Level is 360 hours and is the only place the A* exists. A subject carried through Year 13 and then dropped is not wasted; it is an AS on the certificate.

One shot a year

AS and A2 units are only offered in the summer series. There is no January window to rescue a bad spring. A unit can be re-sat once, and the higher uniform mark is the one used, but that resit lands the following summer, in the same weeks as the A2 papers.

That is worth saying plainly, because it is the thing families realise too late. A weak AS is recoverable. It is recoverable by adding an exam to the busiest fortnight of Year 14, on top of the A2 papers and after the university offers have already been made.

How many subjects

Most pupils carry four subjects through Year 13 and continue three to A2. Schools vary in what they allow and expect, so ask yours rather than assume. What does not vary is that the fourth subject is not a spare: its AS grade is published like the others.

The dates for summer 2027

The written papers run from Friday 30 April to Friday 18 June 2027, with a contingency day on Wednesday 23 June. Visiting examination and moderation periods for music, modern languages, performing arts and art and design run from mid-April into early June. Results are issued on Thursday 12 August 2027.

The mistake worth avoiding

Treating Year 13 as a run-up. Everything encourages it: a common room, more free periods, less supervision, and exams that feel like a rehearsal because the last two years ended in the real thing. They are not a rehearsal. They are the first 40 per cent, and they are the grades a university will see beside the application next autumn.
