Applying to university from Scotland

The UCAS deadlines are the same across the United Kingdom. Almost everything else about the Scottish route to them is different, because the qualification that offers are made on is finished a year earlier.

The dates for 2027 entry

15 October 2026 is the deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, and for any course at Oxford or Cambridge. It applies wherever in the UK the applicant is at school.

13 January 2027 is the equal consideration deadline for everything else. Applications after it are still accepted until 30 June 2027, but universities need not treat them equally and popular courses fill.

10 August 2027 is Scottish results day, when Higher and Advanced Higher results are issued. It falls two days before the English A Level results day on 12 August 2027, which matters if a family is comparing notes or watching Clearing.

S5 or S6

Most Scottish pupils apply in S6, holding Highers already achieved in S5. That is the strongest ordinary position anyone in the UK applies from: real grades rather than predictions.

Some apply in S5, on predicted Highers. It can work, mainly for Scottish universities that make offers on Highers alone, and when the predictions are strong enough to be believed a year early. It is worth discussing with the school rather than deciding at home, because the school writes the reference and the predictions.

The route that goes wrong is applying in S5 as a way of avoiding a decision, and then treating S6 as a formality. An offer conditional on S6 grades is still conditional.

Offers are written in Highers

A Scottish offer is usually expressed as a number of Highers at stated grades, achieved by the end of S5 or the end of S6. Advanced Highers appear in the conditions for competitive courses and for some universities elsewhere in the UK.

Two practical consequences. When reading a course page, find the Scottish requirements specifically, because the A Level line beside it is a different offer and not a translation of the same thing. And when comparing offers between Scottish and English universities, compare the actual conditions rather than a points total.
